Framers of Our Faith

Framers of Our Faith
The 16th Century Religious Reformation
Ismael E. Amaya

To Leonor, faithful wife, friend
and inspiration to all my projects.

—Ismael

The movement of spiritual revival broke out in the sixteenth century, known in history as the Reformation, which responded to a desire to return to the original sources of the Gospel, which had been temporarily blocked by corruption and formalism in the ecclesiastical ranks.

The wave of spiritual concern manifested first in predecessors and then with well known men —Lutero, Calvin— who acted as operating historical factors. But the roots are much further back, for example in St. Augustine, not to mention the Apostles, in particular the Apostle Paul.

In its essence, the Reformation is the restoration of the authority of the Scriptures, which was gradually relegated to the background by a tangle of ecclesiastical traditions and the overdevelopment of the papal authority. Here are the two fundamental pillars on which rests the building of the Reformation (1) the principle of the authority of Scripture as the sole rule of faith and conduct, and (2) the universal priesthood of all believers.

This volume of Dr. Ismael Amaya is written with simplicity and clarity, giving a balanced overview of the Reformation. It is a refreshing historical review that positively contributes to the reaffirmation of evangelical faith.
